‘She has become so popular, it’s true. It’s true,’ the president said.

‘In fact, I’m going to have to ask her how are you doing this but our first lady, they had a poll that came out, she went through it like a rocketship.

Before he showered compliments on his wife, the president opened the event – which is typically hosted by the first and second ladies – by  thanking servicemen and women for contributing to a ‘great’ America.

‘Thank you to the military servicemen for your daily services their families, who are equally as important  in this great great nation, and it’s getting stronger everyday.

‘It is your sacrifice that protects our nation safeguards, our liberties and makes sure our beautiful American flag always waves proudly above our very glorious land.’

He also hinted at the controversies surrounding his decisions in the last few days. Speaking to those in the audience who were nodding their heads as he spoke, Trump said: ‘I see you shaking your head, yes, yes, yes. That’s different than we watch on television every once in a while, that reaction, right? I like your reaction.’

After his speech, Trump welcomed the first lady and gave her a peck on the cheek, which he typically does before introducing her at an event.

Sporting a casual look while wearing a pair of black pants paired with a white shirt and a golden chain, the first lady also gave a rare speech – her third one since her husband was inaugurated –  commending the sacrifices military mothers have to make, and telling them she had ‘no idea’ how they coped with their children’s long absences.

‘I, too, am a mother, however, I have no idea what kind of different challenges each of you must face as the parent of a soldier,’ she said

‘And while you stand with many other parents so strong and so proud, I am sure that you sometimes march on this journey alone.

Donald Trump:’While your sons and daughters are away serving so selflessly, having a community share even some of that burden must make all the difference in the world.

‘I want you to know you’re among that community today and we are all so proud to be part of it with you.

‘I also want to say thank you for all that you do for your selflessness and for your own sacrifice on behalf of our country.’

The couple will only typically share a public kiss before one of them is introduced. The pair are pictured here during a campaign rally at the AeroMod International hangar at Orlando Melbourne International Airport on February 18, 2017 in Melbourne, Florida
